In the Presbyterian Synod to-day, there was a long discussion on the subject of temperance. It was stated that the Good Templars were doing an immense amount of good. Id was resolved to do everything possible to put down the evil.

The first denominational school in the diocese opened yesterday. In the evening addresses on education were delivered by Judge Chapman, Bishop Neville, and others. Mr Logan, member of the Presbyterian Church, is to be tried by the Synod for openly avowing himself a spiritualist at the manifestation of Mr Pebbles. The Synod refused to hear defence by counsel.

The Synod had a long discussion on the obtiervonce of the Sabbath, and it was resolved to petition the Provincial Council if the Government refused to stop Sunday trains.

At the Presbyterian Synod last night, a long discussion took place on the motion of the Rev Mr Stobo proposing to form a union of the North and South Presbyterian Churches in NewZealand. Two Northern deputies, the Beys Hill and M'Kinney, were heard in support of the motion to form a Committee to inquire into the whole matter. JWone o'clock this morning it was carried by 2e to 11. ■.■r Auckland, January 16. ■The acceptances for the Papakura Handicap are Yatteritia, Parawhenua, Fawn, Flying Jib, Dainty, and Kingfisher.

Both the crow and the captain of the schooner Dauntless wero picked up exhausted by the pilot cutter after being an hour in the water, on the Kaipara bar.
