CIVIL BITTINGS. (Before his Honor Mr. Justice Richmond.) This Day. The Hokitika and Greymouth Tramway Company {Limited) v. The County Council and the Inhabitants of the County of Westland. ' This was an action brought by the plaintiffs to recover tbe sum of £20,000 as damages for the breach of a contract, under which the defendants agreed that in consideration that plaintiffs would construct and maintain a tramway from Hokitika to Stafford Town, the defendants would, in the event of any Government road being opened that should compete with the tramway to its detriment, pay to the plaintiffs reasonable compensation for, losses thereby sustained. ; Mr Heber Newton, of Greymouth, and Mr Pitt, appeared for plaintiffs ; aud the Attorney- General, Mr Sodth, of Hokitika, and Mr Fell, for defendants. -, The evidence, which possesses no parr ticular local interest, was taken on commission at Hokitika, and the greater part of the day Was taken up in reading the evidence. , „ His Honor was summing up when we went to press.
