The Claud Hamilton was to leave Wellington at six o'clock this evening, will arrive here in the morning, and Bail again for Melbourne via West Coast ports by the same tide. Chakles' Panorama. — A capital entertainment was given at the Oddfellows' Hall last night, when Mr Charles' panorama, descriptive of the late FrancoPrussian war, was exhibited to an audience who could not fail to be pleased with the numerous views that were passed before them. Some of the scenery was beautifully depicted. The march from Paris was a most spirited picture, and there were several other views that are really well worth seeing. An additional attraction was offered in the shape of a number of valuable presents which were given away during the eveuing. The next entertainment will be given to-morrow evening. Captain Irving sen., of the ship Excelsior, expired suddenly on Friday last at Napier. We are indebted to the ' Buller News * for the following very flowery description
of society and manners at the Lyeli:— • Blackening eyes, chewed thumbs, free fighting, Jaud stabbing are amongst the delicacies ofthe season, in which the good people of Lyeil have baen revelling during the late period of excitement. On Saturday evening, after the little jolification indulged in on the discovery of tho rich leader in the Monte Christo, one of the men named Hayes, under the influence of strong potations, became very abusive, and gave such provocation to an Italian named^ Gobardo Campini, that a fight ensued, during which Hayes received a frightful stab from Campini from a sharp pointed sheath knife. The knife penetrated the depth of the blade, and then glanced off in an oblique direction, leaving an ugly if not dangerous wound, about four inches loug and nearly as deep. Tjh6 assailant; who is :represented as a qu'iery inoffensive, industrious man, has been committed for trial.
