Resident Magistrate's Court . — Arthur Harding Walters, an absconder from Melbourne, was brought up this morning and remanded for eight days. Hg was arresied last night by Sergt. Nnsh at ths Custom Houae Hotel, a telegram giving his description and stating that a warrant was out against him from Castlemaine for having embezzled £200 having been received yesterday from luvercargill whither it had been brought by the Albion. Prisoner who admitted being the person that was wanted, arrived by the Tararua on Thursday. Entertainment at Richjiond. — Ao entertainment was given last night by the Richmond school boys, which afforded great gratification to a numerous and appreciative audience. There were readings, recitations, and dialogues, each piece seeming to be admirably adapied to the voice and capability of the boy to whom it was assigned. The dialogues were especially well-rendered, and the clear enunciation, appropriate gestures, and gentlemanly bearing of the boys would have reflected credit on any performers. As most of the pieces were really well done, something might be said in commendation of each, but we cannot refrain from alluding to the inimitable manner in which the irascible Frenchman was personified by Master Hodder, and the exceedingly effective manner in which Masters Higgs and Harkness recited the defiance scene from the Earl of Warwick, which was really guile a little triumph of elocution. The boya were assisted by two of their former schoolfellows, who have recently left for College, so that the winners of the Provincial Scholarships for the last three consecutive years stood upon the platform together. We understand that the proceeds are to be devoted to the purchase of bats, balls, &c, for the use of the schoolboys. The Late Election. — Mr Curtis' town Committee met last night at the Masonic Hotel for the purpose of congratulating the Superintendent on his recent election, Mr Wright, the Chairman, proposed fhe health of his Honor which was drunk with great enthusiasm. Mr Curtis replied, thanking those who had exerted themselves in his behalf, and referring especially to the courteous reception he had met with on the West Coast, and the large amount of support he had received there. The health of the country and West. Coast Committees, the Provincial Council, Mr O'Conor and his Committee, and various other toasts were proposed and done honor to, and after several excellent songs had been sung the party broke up a little before midnight. -
