The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY OCTOBER 16, 1873.

Election of Superintendent. — The writ for the election of Superintendent wsß issued at Wellington on Tuesday last, and ia made returnable in 70 days, so that if there is to be a conteßt it will probably commence at once. The Auckland Fire. — The following ia a correct statement of the losses sustained by the Insurance Offices in the late fire; — New Zealand £17,650, Victoria, £6000, South British £5850, Northern £3000, Pacific £2000, Norwich Union £1000, Imperial ±700. The Hairless Horse, — This strange looking animal is still on exhibition at the Masonic Hall, and is attracting a large number of persons. He is -well worth a visit, and we would recommend those who have not yet seen him to do so without delay. Tiie Claud Hamilton. — It appears that the steamer which tendered this steamer hnd not been able to return up to ten o'clock this morning, nnd consequently would not be able to cross tho bar until this evening. This accounts for the nonappearance of the telegrams brought by her in this evening's issue. Artizans' Association. — The success which attended the last entertainment given by the members of this Association has induced them to appear before the public again, and a dramatic performance similar to the last is advertised for tomorrow evening, when there will be a number of new songs. No doubt another crowded bouse will reward the efforts of the performers. Auckland Races. — The Auckland Jockey Club are advertising some liberal prizes to be run for on the 26th and 27th of December. The two principal events are the Auckland Turf Club Handicap, two miles, of 200 soys, added to a sweepstakes of 10 soys, and the New Zealand Cup, also a handicap, the same distance and for a similar stake. In former advertisements an error had crept into the conditions of these two events, it being stated that there was to be a forfeit of £2 10s, but this we are requested to state was a mistake. Cricket. — The challenge issued by the Union Club Eleven has been accepted, and sixteen ployers have been found in the town willing to do battle with them Saturday. Messrs M'Cabe and Lloyd have interested themselves in getting together the sixteen. The following are the names : — H. Barnett, T. Batcbelor, Bird, Blundel), Burn, A. Campbell, G. Campbell, Chittenden, Lloyd, Jackson, M'Cabe, Pratt, Schroder, Tribe, Atmore, and Aiken. The Union Eleven are as follows: — Atkinson (Captain), Baddeley, Barnett, Bernicoat, Cross, Coles, Greenfield. Halliday, Speed, Tenuent, liiley (twelfth m3n or umpire). The wickets will be pitched in the Botanical Gardens at 1,30 p.m., and the game will commence at 2 p.m. sharp. Upper Moutere, — In response to an invitation from Mr C. Kelling, a wellattended meeting of the electors of Moutere and Dovedale was held on Monday evening. Mr Kelliag on coming forward was received with applause. After briefly thanking the meeting for the way in which they had responded to his invitation, he went on to give an outline of the several Acts passed in the Council, and his views en each of them. At the close of his address several questions were put and answered in a satisfactory manner. A vote of thanks to Mr Kelling was proposed by a Moutere elector, and one of confidence by one from Dovedale, both of which were carried by acclamation. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting. Show of Rams. — The first Ram show in the province was held on the Racecourse yesterday, when 44 were exhibited, many of them being of really excellent quality. A Lincoln ram shown by Mr Ailport was a splendid sheep, as was one of the J>ieester breed exhibited by Mr Max. Mr Martin showed two pens, one of four, and the other of two, beir;g a cross between a Southdown ram and Leicester ewes, and it was curious to observe the result, the former number taking after the dams, and the latter affer the sire. The object of yesterday's show was to decide which should be exhibited at Richmond next month, and a similar selection will be made at Wakefield on Monday next. We should be glad to learn that our Motueka and Suburban North friends were about to contribute to the November show. The following is a list of the sheep exhibited: — Lincolne: Mr A. Ailport 2, Mr Marsden 2. Southdown : Mr Jenkins 3, Mr Saxton 1, Mr Nicholson 1, Mrßuxton 3. Shropshire: Mr Jenkins 1, Mr Saxton 2, Mr Doidge 7. Leicester : Mr Max 4. Cotswold : Mr Max 1. Negretti ; Mr Green 1 j Rarabouilfet • Mr Green 1 % Merino jMr Jenkins 1. Croesbreds — Romney Marsh and Lincoln : Mr Root 1; Southdown and Leicester : Mr Martin 7 ; ditto, Mr Jenkins 2 ; Lincoln and Southdown : Mr Jonkine 1 ; Shropshire and Merino, third cross, Mr Saxton 4 j liomuey Man>h and Southdown : Mr Rout 1. Pnarazyn of fifty guineas — half bis houorariutn— to the Athenceum. We have now to record a second instance of this gentleman's liberality, he having presented the second half of his honorarium to the Wellington Diocesan Pension Fund, to which such a handsome contribution as £52 10s will be a most acceptable augmentation.—- Post,
