A model lodging house has been opened in Melbourne. One hundred and fifty sleepers per night can be accommodated, in fine large airy dormitories, at sixpence per night. Laat week a cask of brandy, a cask of wine, and a large parcel of envelopes, supposed to have formed a portion of the cargo of the wrecked steamer Rangitoto, were found oa the beach at Wangamonana, Palisser Bay, near the residence of Mr John Russell, by some of that gentleman's men, who are said to have had a tegular jollification over the affair. Messrs M'Meckan, Blackwood, and Co. have presented Captain Fairchild, of the Luna, with a remarkably handsome diamond ring, valued at 40 guineas. The setting is very plaiu and massive. It bears the inscription :-—" Captain Fairchild, from M'Meckau, Blackwood & Co., for kindness shown to the wrecked passengers s.s. Rangitoto, 1873. Our telegrams of Thursday last contained a reference to an extraordinary speech made by Mr Webster, in which he showered abuse upon the human race generally, beginning with Ministers and finishing with editors. 'We have uot been able to find a report of this singular production in our Wellington exchanges, but the Post refers to it in, the following terms: — Post prandiura speeches rarely bear the morning's reflection. We do not envy the feelings of the member for Wailac-e this morning if he entertains any recollection of his performance last night. The tone of the House of Representatives has not improved of late years. There was a time when it would have refused to witness such an exhibition, und have summarily suppressed the performer. . If Mr Webster has any respect for himself, his position, or the chamber in which he sits, he will feel that he owes the House an apology. Another poor girl has died in Virginia from the use of tobacco at the age of 100. She was an orphan.
