CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs. Barnicoat (Gbairman), Rout, Campbell, Buddie (for Motueka), Kelling, Wastuey, Garin, Mercer, Talbot, Jackson, Thorpe, Wigzell, W. P. Smith, Masters, Simmons, Bum, Percy, Broad, and Rose. On the motion of Mr Wigzeli, the salary of the mistress of the Preparatory School was increased to £90 per annum, on tho ground that the total expense of the school had been considerably diminished since Miss Cother's appointment. On the motion of Mr Thorpe ifc was agreed to set apart £15 to defray the cost of removing the Pangatotara school-room, as soon as two-thirds of the ratepayers have agreed upon a site. The sums of £5 were voted for r pumps at the Spring Grove and River Terrace schools, and £17 for painting the schools at Waimea West, and erecting a pump at the Northern school. Petitions from Upper Moutere and Riwaka were presented by Messrs. C. Kelling and Burn, requesting the Board to rescind their resolution of August 7th as to the discontinuance of assistant teachers, so far as it affects those districts. It was resolved, after a division, " That the resolution be not rescinded." Resolved, on the motion of Mr Simmoos, that the gentlemen appointed to examine the candidates for Provincial Scholarships be empowered to get the papers printed in Wellington or elsewhere, out of Nelson." Mr Wigzell laid before the Board the following resolution of the Town Committee :— " The Local Committee, while recognising that such assistance was required, regret that the Central Board of Education has resolved that an assistant teacher should be appointed to the second division of the Hardy-street Girls' School, without having first ascertained from the Local Committee whether such appointment was required by them." The Secretary was instructed to point out to the Town Committee that the urgent uecessity for the appointment referred to had been twice shown by the Inspector in his Annual Reports, but that the Committee had neglected to take any action whatever in the matter until this year, when one of the representatives of the Town Committee had himself brought the matter before the Board. The Secretary was also requested to explain to the Town Committee that, while the appointment of teachers is vested in Local Committees by the Education Act, the Board has always reserved to itself the right of deciding how many teachers Bhall be employed, and what shall be the rate of their remuneration."
