Two thousand guests attend the Mayor's iancy-dress ball to-night. The new Police Bill proposes the superannuation of members of tha force at fifty-five years of age, after fifteen years' service, at from £60 to £70 a-year. Diptheria is making great ravages. An attempt to murder a female cook has been made by a fellow male servant with a sledge hammer. The second official report on the coal deposits in Victoria is very discouraging. Sydney, August 27. A heavy action is pending against the Peak Downs Copper Company for selling shares upon a false statement of the affairs of the mine. The first wool of the new clip has arrived from Queensland. The Admiralty Conrt confirms the seizure of the schooner Challenge for a breach of the Polynesian Act. Launceston, August 27. All the Ministers have been returned. Adelaide, August 27. Large Anti-immigration meetings continue to be held. The secular character of the Education Bill is condemned. Wheat, 6s, in demand.
