NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.
'J he Board met last night. An application wbb received from Mr Syraons for permission to erect a private telegraph wire to the Port. The matter was ordered to stand over until next Board nijiht. In compliance with a request from the Collector it was resolved that a notice should be advertised to the effect that the Board would sue unless the rates were paid within ten days. A letter was received from Dr. Williams expressing regret that he had uot yet been able to furnish his report upon the sanitary state of the town, and suggesting that steps should be taken for abolishing all water closets and substituting earth closets.
Mr Fell urged upon the Board the necesßity that existed for their at once using such powers as they possessed under the Towns Improvement Act in the direction of protecting the public health. Ho moved the following resolution with a view to its transmission to the Central Board of Health : — " The Board regrets that, through the professional engagements of Dr Williims, they are not yet in a position to furnish the Report upon the sanitary condition of the city, but that they are informed by Dr. Williams that he hopes to have the Report ready by next Board night, when it will be at once furnished to the Central Board. In the meantime, the Board earnestly desires to- impress upon the Central Board their opinion (of which the Central Board is already iv possession), that the provisions of the Public Health Act, sections 20 to 45, should at once be brought into operatiou, seeing that the health of the town ia at present in a very unsatisfactory otate." Agreed to. Resolved : "That the Inspector of Nuisances be ordered forthwith to examine all premises in the city in which he has any 'suspicion that any nuisance exists, and in ..every case when found, to give a peremp- •' tory notice requiring the abatement of such nuisance, failing which immediate proceedings be taken." On the motion of Mr Hooper, it was ' reßolved : — " That the attention of the Provincial Government be called to the insecure state from decay of the Bridgestreet and Milton Grovo bridges, aud that in the opinion of this Board a cart-bridge should be erected over the Maitai at as that site is the most central for traffic to the^city." The Board then adjourned.
