The Nelson Evening Mail, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20, 1873.

Wesletan Chuech. — We remind our readers of the leeturo on Maori life to be delivered by the Rev T. Buddie this eveniug. A Provincial Government Gazette of twenty- four pages has just been published, containing new rules and regulations of tha Nelson Goldfields. Lunatic Asylum. — Tenders are called for by the Provincial Government for levelling fcho site for the new asylum. They will be received until ooon on Saturday next. Musical Entertainment. — Mrs Palmer announces that, with the assistance of several amateurs, she proposes giving a Musical and Dramatic Entertainment at the Masonic Hall, on Wednesday evening next. His Excellency tho Governor, with the advice of his Ministers, has issued a warrant directing an enquiry into the circumstances under which the s.b. Ladybird ran aground at the Manukau last month. The enquiry is to be held in Wellington on the 27th instant. Perseverance Company. — Mr Hall, the manager of the Ajax Company's mine at the Lyell, who was appointed to inspect the Perseverance mine, reports that he considers the workings have hitherto been carried nu injudiciously, nnd at an unnecessary expense. He recommends waiting for the result of the Decimal Company's working, and is of opinion that the mino may be made lo yield a profit if economically worked. The Vice Regal Establishment. — Our telegrams to-day reveal a, very pretty state of things as having existed during the time that Sir George Bowen held the reins of Government in New Zealand. No wonder he could afford to be hospitable when the Government, that is the colony, was finding him even in such articles as " cradles, saddles, linen, blankets, and clothes," JudgiDg from the telegraphic summary of laßt night's discussion, that number of Hansard which contains it in full should supply some racy reading.
