Life Assurance.— Our country readers Ure reminded that Mr Thomson, travelling agent for the Australian Mutual Life Assurance Society, will lecture at the Public Hall, Stoke, at half-past seven this evening. Oddfellows' Fete. — The raising of the standard of Oddfellowship in the province of Nelson is to be commemorated by a grand gala day in Waimea East tomorrow. A procession will be formed at the Bridge Hotel in the morning whence the members will march to St. Paul's Church, Spring Grove. In the afternoon there will be a number of sports, and the day will be brought to a conclusion, by a public dinner. A most successful day is anticipated. Steamer Murray. — The engines of this steamer, which has just been lengthened 16 feet, were tried pn Saturday afternoon and found to work most satisfactorily, the little boat running the measured mile at the rate of 10 knots an hour. The workmanlike manner in which the alterations have been made in the Murray reflects the highest credit upon Mr Brown, Messrs N. Edwards & Co's managing engineer, and we question whether there is a port in New Zealand where the work could have been done in a more satisfactory manner. As. eoon as the internal fittings are completed the owners intend to have a thorough trial trip of the boat which,' when all the proposed improvements have been made, will be the flower of their fleet. Christ Church.-— A handsome addition has been made to the furniture of this church in the shape of a Brussels carpet for the chancel, new 1 coverings for the cushions and kheelersat the altar, and a crimson velvet lining for the Bishop's chair. The carpet,? which is very suitable for the purpose, has a crimson 'ground which is interspersed -with ' yellow jfleiirs ';■ de lis, . It was selected in? Melbourne by the Bishop or A., # .
