THE MURILLO— ARREST OF THE CAPTAIN AND CREW
0 — (From the Aberdeen Daily Free Press, Feb. 4). A Cadiz telegram states that the result of the inquiry into the conduct of the Murillo has not yet transpired. Depositions made before the British Consul by the engineers of the steamer and an Englishman on board confirm circumstantially the main facts of the disaster, and coincide with the accounts of the loss of the Nortfleet. The parties interested in the steamer admit that they came into collision with some vessel on the. night of the disaster at Dungness, but deny that it was the Northfieet. A survey by the local authorities has been unfavourable to the Murillo, and the survey has furnished evidence of a collision with a wooden ship. Pending the issue of the proceedings instituted, the master and some of the crew have been placed under arrest. A Lisbon despatch states that two passengers on board the steamer Murillo testify that they distinctly heard cries for help from the Northfieet after the collision, and were horrified to find the Murillo sheering off. The following message is dated Cadiz, Sunday : — The depositions of Samuel Bell, passenger, and James Goodeave„ second engineer of the Murillo, state that they distinctly heard cries from the Northfieet, and endeavored to persuade the Spaniards to send boats. Messrs Punchard & Co. have handed over to the Mansion House Northfieet Relief Fund the reward of JGIOO offered by them for the.discovery of the steamer which ran down the Northfieet, by direction of Messrs E. Pinto, Basto, & Co., Lisbon, and Mr Macpherspn, Cadiz. The following telegram has been received by Clark, Punchard, & Co , from Pinto, Basto, & Co., Lisbon : — " Murillo coming up. Supposed was ordered away from Cadiz. . Wire instructions."
