March, 11. • Mr Eeeves addressed his constituents on Friday last, and defended the Fox-Vogel Government from charges regarding the Brogden contracts. He excused the delay on account of railways on the ground that the staff at the disposal of the Government *was insufficient, and, the Government unprepared. If New Zealand Tailways could be constructed at less than -65000 per mile, we would have them cheaper thaninany other part of the' world. The Government last session unfairly judged and ' condemned. The reason why he (Reeves) declined to join Mr : Vbgel's Ministry, though much pressed to do so, was, firstly, because he resented the/vote of the House on Mr Stafford's No Confidence motion; secondly, he : ; discovered that Mr "Vogel > gave/ pledges regarding other members of the Ministry such that he (Reeves) could inat'be a 'party ! to.
