Wellington, February 13. The Governor has' received an* invitation from the friendly chiefs of Waikato to attend a native meeting. Ngamawahia and Re.wi. promised to attend. The Governor consented. The meeting is intended to be held about ttie middle of March #

The Government have decided to ask the Superintendent to invite the principal surveyors of each province to meet at Wellington to discuss the means of ..improving the general surveys of the colony. The Governor has given £\5 to the Benevolent Institute. .'■"■ The Government are considering a prop^al to grant forms for the first screw collier put into the coal 'rade at Greymouth. The Independent says an offer has been made to the County Council of Westland for a lease of five thousand acres for a coalfield on the south side of the Grey river, a part of the same seam as the Branner mine. The same paper regards . the American subsidy as doubtful. Donedint, February 13. The City Council have under their consideration proposals for street tramways. Sir David Monro is expected to address his constituents at Waikouati by the next trip of the Taranaki. - The wool market is dull. Buyers shew no disposition to purchase except at reduced prices.
