SYDNEY.
February s. —An old woman, aged 54, has bnen cruelly murdered by a boatman named S course, aged 45. Both had been drinking, and he was conveying her from Sydney to the North v^hore on Saturday night, when, it is supposed that he stunned her by striking her with his paddle, and then threw her overboard. The body was picked up down the harbor. A coroner's inquest has been held, and the prisoner remanded until Friday. The colliers strike at Newcastle still continues. The miners present laborers hired from Sydney and Newcastle from workinz at tlie associated collieries, The Patterson is ready for sea, but is unable to get coal. The strike is causing frightful havoc amongst the shipping. The Vettor Pisan is the first Italian war ship ever in Sydney. She will be followed by the war ship Garibaldi, in which a nephew of King Victor Emanuel is expected. MELBOURNE. February s. —The floating of the Government half-million loan is regarded as a failure. The Age condemns Mr. Langton aa a short-sighted financier. The Argus thinks that perhaps it waß owing to its being premature that it proved a failure. An additional £15,000 will probably be taken at par. No bill will be filed against Young, the defaulting Oriental Bank Manager. Tbe week shows a decreasing traffic on the Victorian railways.
