MELBOURNE. February I.— Captain Gilbee has been cashiered by the Volunteer authorities for allowing a woman of ill-fame to walk about the streets of Melbourne in his uniform. Mr Tait has disposed of the racehorse Quack for exportation to India. The Melbourne Meat Preserving Company purposes to' suspend operations owing to the high prices of stock. The oat crop is almost a failure. Kerosine is held, firmly. White and yellow sugars are rising ; maize 2s 9_d. February 3. — The Banks, at the instance of the Bank of New South Wales, are again combining. Justice Fellowes, late from New Zealand, takes over the Circuit Court this montb. The Inspector of the Union Bank has been served with a writ for £30,000 at the suit of a> city merchant largely interested in squatting properties in Queensland. The Fulton Foundry Company has declared a dividend of 8 per cent. Money returns are satisfactory. A good business is doing in Sandhurst stocks. February 4.— Tenders are called for £500,000 at 4 per cent; only £13,000 have been taken up. The majority of the tenders were £97 15s.
