If anything should happen to prevent the St. Kilda steamer coming in to-day, housekeepers will have to prepare for a meat famine. Fisb, too, are scarce, and town-fed pork not tempting. Hot.—The thermometer at Tokomairiro, Otago, registered no less than 98 degrees in the shade on the 24th ult., being 10 degrees more than in Dunedin. In Southland the heat on the same day was intense, and in some places seriously damaged the crops. The Flint's Bush correspondent of one of the Invercargill papers, after reporting that the heat had done great injury to the crops, says: — " Before this terrible day everything looked well, and a good yield of grain was anticipated." The Late Gold Robbery on the Coast.—The G. R. Argus of Friday last says :—As far as the general public are aware, no trace has yet been found of the gold stolen from Mr J. Hayes on 31st December. The police, whoße efforts to unravel the mystery are untiring, are said to have found a clue which enables them to fix a reasonable suspicion upon certain parties, hut whether this will justify an arrest or lead to the recovery of the property remains to be seen.
