- 0 The Sub-Committee met in the Grand Jury room last night to arrange the basis upon which the proceedings should be carried outi.* After some little discussion the following resolutions were agreed to: — On the motion of Mr. Blundell it was resolved : — That a. Committee be appointed to enquire into and report upon the .most desirable gauge, direction, gradients, aud curves, together, with, the cheapest possible description of riailway that is , compatible ;with stabilitjrand efficiency; .also to make euggeßtibriis asV to any other mode of^overland communication be V°3^ ithe:7We#t|Go^ sist of Messrs. 3.. to enquire into and report upon the following questions z-i- -.dd "\ I, ■'(!.») The quantity of land my the basins of the Motueka, Buller, and Grey that would be beneficially affected bythe proposed line of railway. (2.) The quantity of land in each watershed adapted for agriculture. (3.) Ditto containing coal seams, with their character and positions. (4.) The extent of auriferous lands, whether alluvial or reefs. (5.) The extent of timbered lands, and different kinds of timber. 11. The present population of each of these basins, and the employments of the inhabitants. 111. The present yield of gold from each district, both from alluvial diggings and quartz reefs. IV. The cost of carriage to the centres of "population from the different ports. Y. The prices of all necessaries of life at the inland centres of population, and the comparison they-bear to those ruling in Nelson.-* VI. The reasons of the difference in the prices. VII. The estimated capabilities of the respective districts to carry population. VIII. The revenue that it is estimated they will yield. * IX. The probable land revenue to be derived from the sale of sites for townships. X* The general mineral resources of the districts through which the line will pass. XI. The imports and exports at the West Coast ports. XI. Any other subjects bearing upon the question of railway communication. On the motion of Mr. Acton Adams, it was resolved: — That a Committee consisting of Messrs. Sclanders, Stavert, Pitt, Rout, Luckie, and the mover be appointed to enquire into and report upon the various financial schemes under which the proposed communication may be effected. The Committees will meet this evening at seven o'clock.
