Lord Kimberly presided The Chairman rtad telegrams from the Australian colonies and San Fraocisco A letter was read from Mr. Gladstone,regretting his absence. Eight toasts wc-re proposed, " The Queen," " Tha Royal Family," " Telegraphic Enter, rise," "The British Telegraph Officers and Service," " Prosperity of the t olonies," " The Guests." and " The Ladies " During the evening the Chairman exchanged messages with. f»ourh Australia, which were transmitted in two hours and a quarter. Special commendation was pronounced on South Australia's energy and enterprise. The toast of the " Integrity of the Empire," evoked tremendous enthusiasm,
