Oddfellows' Hall. — There was a fair attendance at the Oddfellows' Hall last 'night, when Mr. Maclaren, with the assistance of a few amateurs, gave one of his. miscellaneous entertainments. We have described the performance before, and it is now only necessary to say that it passed off quite ac successfully as on previous occasions. Fatal Accident.— A painful accident occurred at Wakefield yesterday, whereby Mr. Arthur Baigent lost one of his sons, a little boy of two years old, by drowning. It appears tbat tbe poor little fellow was playing with a party of children a short distance from his father's house, and tbat towards dinner-time he left them unobserved. Shortly afterwards he was missed, and, on search being made, he was found by his mother lying dead in the mill- stream, into which it is supposed he had fallen in his endeavor to reach his home. An inquest is to be held to-day. Yesterday's Holiday. — A very pleasant holiday was spent by the townspeople yesterday, who, the weather being imp, turned out in picnic parlies in all directions. A good many were present at the Artizans' picnic in the Maitai Valley, where games aud dancing were going on all day, a well attended ball, at which dancing was kept up with great spirit until an early hour this, morning, bringing the programme lo a close. The children's picnic in Brook-street Valley was very successful ; the sie»mers were well filled, the little Baikly having over 150 on board on her return from ihe Rabbit Island. The Charles Edward was unfortunate, some slight accideut lo her boiler rendering it necessary for her to return immediately after her airival at Allele Island, thus entirely spoiling the pleasure of the picnic parties she[bad conveyed thither, who had just commenced to make preparations for their noonday meal when the whistle warned them to go on board again. The "Rocks" were as u^ual largely resorted to, while the two cricket mutches attracted a few lookers on. « The day was a lovely one, notbiDg being wanting so far as ihe weather was concerned to make the holiday a perfect success. M'Lean, Acton A<iams, and Power are mentioned as probable candidates for the representation of the newly created Provincial Council electoral disirict of Inangahua.
