The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JULY 27, 1872.

Nelson Boatid o_ Woeks. — The annual meeting of ratepayers will be held at noon on Monday next for the purpose of electing eight members of the Board, the whole of those now in office having: to retire in accordance with the provisions of the " Towns Improvement Act, 1872." p Comedy and Burlesque Company. — This compnny, which leaves for the South in the Rangitoto, will give a farewell performance at the Oddfellows' Hall this evening. The prices of admission have been considerably reduced, and a very liberal programme is provided, comprising, among other items, some of Miss Jennie Nye's most admired songs, and the wonderful performances of the one-legged dancer. Nelson College. — A course of lectures on botany is to be given in connection with the New Zealand University by Dr. Boor, commencing on Monday next, and to be continued on Thursday and Monday in each week. There is every desire to make these lectures of general use, and therefore not only ore the students at the College to be allowed to avail themselves of them, but they are to be thrown open to the public on payment of the trifling fee of half-a-gninea for the entire course. We have been requested to state that although Mondays and Thursdays have been decided upon as the days on which the lectures are to be given, there will be no obstacle placed in the way of an alteration of the dates, if any other days in the week are more likely to suit the public convenience. Wesleyan Tea Meeting. — A social meeting of the members of the congregation took place in the Wesleyan Church last evening, to consider the best means to be adopted for reducing the circuit debt. Extracts from a letter by the Rev. J. Warren were read, in which he offers to pay a visit at hie own expense about Christmas time, and to preach in all the churches within tbe circuit, and in addition to this to give a donation of £20 provided that certain suggestions made by him are carried into effect. Owing to the unfortunate state of the weather and attractions elsewhere, there was but a limited number present, but the sum of £60 was promised by them. A resolution passed at the late quarterly meeting thankfully accepting Mr. Warren's offer was then read and adopted by the meeting. Abtizans' Association. — Last night's entertainment was eminently successful, the audience, which was a very crowded one, being on excellent terms with the performers, who were evidently determined to do their best to amuse. Most of the musical portions were very creditably executed, but the choruses would have been considerably improved had greater pains been taken to assimilate the voices. The comic songs which were provocative of much laughter were enthusiastically I encored, and the readings and recitations were well-selected and met with hearty applause. The farce was really a " screaming " one, the "get up" of Mesdames BpxJ Cox, and Bouncer being decidedly characteristic, and though the ladies were, if anything, , a trifle too muscular, they accommodated themselves to their new position with .considerable facility, but occasionally; there was. a scarcely supjon their countenances Hbat ■■■■*■-■•■-"'■-* .■'■■••■■'• v - v^^i^^smsm&esVs^-j - : ;^Mim^

seemed to say that they wore enjoying the j fun quite as much as the audience. Wo are requested to state that a social meeting will take place at the Society's Rooms this evening, when members are invited to attend.
