Wellington, July 27. The Puhlic Health Bill was committed last night, and slightly amended. The Life Assurance Bill passed through Committee with slight amendments. Several speakers condemned the Rill. Mr Fitzherbert said that it was an Improper interference with private enterprise, and was calculated to drive capital from the country. He condemned the present reckless administration of the Government and hoped that the people would come with overwhelming power and take the [matter into their own hands . Mr Gillies said that the principal object of the Bill was to replenish the Treasury. Greymouth Harbor Works Validation Act is postponed. Bills relating to Maori representation, and legalising marriage with a deceased wife's sister were read the first, time, A select committee was appointed to consider the advisability of establishing a branch Mint, The House agreed to a return showing the cost per head of the immigrants lately arrived Mr Ormond said tbat the Agent General had written by the jlast mail stating that 2000 emigrants had started for New Zealand since the eornixencement of April, one-fourth of whom were Scandinavians, and the remainder from the United Kingdom. Mr O'Rorke, of Auckland, drew attention to the Agent General's neglect of Ireland. The debate on the reduction of the Gold Duty was further adjourned.
