The Rangitoto arrived from Melbourne at 2 p.m. She brings the following passengers :— For Greymouth, Mrs. Middleton ; for Nelson, Mrs. Small and child ; for Wellington, the hon. Matthew Holmes, Mrs. and Miss Holmes; for Lyttelton, Mr. Davidson; for Dunedin, Mr. Jones. She has 220 tons of cargo for all ports. MELBOURNE. July 20. — The financial statement of Mr. Langton shows a surplus of £8200. The Estimates are proceeding with but little opposition. No new case of smallpox is reported. Sanitary precautions are being carried out. The prisoners, and members of the local defence force have all been re-vaccinated. Mr Macpherson proposed in the Assembly a tax upon all imported cattle and sheep from the neighboring colonies, in order to carry out the true principles of protection.
