PARLIAMENTARY.

The Government promised yesterday to bring down an amended Goldfields Act.
The following Bills passed the second reading : — Lunatics; Industrial Committees; Public Health; i-harebrokeri?; and Drawbacks.
The second reading of the Permanent Officers' Salaries Bill, the Public Trust Office Bill, and the Assurance Companies Bill are adjourned. The object of the latter is to compel such companies to deposit £20,000 security for policies.
The House has agreed to ask for returns from the Immigration Agent, and salaries connected with the scheme, also a schedule of railway contracts, Bnd tbe cost per mile ; also a supplementary return of officials in the General, Provincial, and County Governments; also the amount of money borrowed and expended, with the number of miles of water-race actually in use ; also of railways opened, and the traffic ou them ; also the balance of money and how invested.
The Government gave way on every point raised last night. The Opposition is numerically stronger, but wants unity and a definite policy. A great debate is expected to-day on Mr Gi'lies' motion, asking Government to bring down tbe measure promised last session for dealing comprehensively with the Provinces, and defining their functions.
