A Wellington Paper says that the directors of the Australian Mutual Provident Society have taken prorapt measures to secure their clients against smallpox. We see that it is announced in Nelson also, that all members who may desire it, will be re-vaccinated, gratis, by the Society's medical officer, Dr. Scaly. The Wellington Post learns that a Larrikins Bill will, in all probability be brought in this session, in order to give magistrates power to sentence youths under twenty-one years of age to short terms of imprisonment, or to imprisonment with flogging, for the committal of offences, the result of " larking," but which, under other circumstances, would bo severely dealt with. The Independent relates that "Mr. Speaker did a graceful and appropriate act in congratulating the House upon the accession to its numbers, in the person of Mr. Sheehao, of a gentleman who is the first of European descent, born in the colony, elected to Parliament," The remark wss appropriate, and would have been graceful if the Speaker had not blundered it. He otnitted any mention of <* European descent ; " so that when the neat little speech was translated to Wi Parata 9 the only native member in the House yesterday, he observed, " Parau.! kua ivanau ahau hi N-ti Tirani;"-*" Fibs ! I was born in New Zealaud ! " — Post. Mr. Beogden's Navvies. — The Post of Saturday last says.: — What all' our attempts at Permissive and Licensing legislation have failed to procure, Messrs. Brogdens' navvies have succeeded in obtaining for us. These men of " thews ants sinews," who were^ landed yesterday, successfully proved the intoxicating effects of our local industry beer, and were generally in so foggy a state at an early hour last evening that many publicans closed at the abnormally early hour of ten." To-day the, Rangatira was to have conveyed to Picton these desirable acquisitions
