Ironical.— G-. W. Calvert, master of the schooner Elizabeth Curie, writes as fellows to the G. R. Argus : — Sir — Please give me a corner to express my thanks to ilio managers of the Grey coalmines for tbe grand appliances they have for giving a vessel quick dispatch. The Gas Company, in Wellington, are advertisiug for vessels to come here for coals — they would rather have them than Newcastle. I shall roost decidedly advise masters of vessels to take a charter, for it is a pleasure to lay three weeks alongside the Grey wharf that very few of the Wellington shipmasters know anything about. A Valuable Goose. — The fable of the goo-e that laid the golden eggs seems likely to be partially realised in New Zealand. The Temuka correspondent of the Timaru Herald writes as follows : — "I have been, shown a sample of rough gold, weighing one and a-half grains, which has been tested, and valued as worth £3 10s. per ounce. Mr. H. Pratt, of this town, on Monday morning, when cleaning the inside of a goose, found in the gizzard a number of small pieces of >:old, weighing as above. The largest piece, I should say, weighs about threequarters of a grain, and the other pieces are of various sizes ; the whole shows j signs of the action of the water, there being no sharp edges, There must evidentjy be gold in the district, and payable, from the size of the samples. Happiness Defined. — A good man who has seen much of (he world and is tired of it says : — "The grand essentials to happiness are somehing to do, something to love, and something to hope for. :>
