second part will consist of vocal and instrumental music, and a very pleasant evening's entertainment may be expected, while the low price charged for admission will place it in the power of all to attend. Death of Bishop Viard. — We regret to have lo chronicle the death of Dr. Viard, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Wellington. The deceased gentleman was born at Lyons in 1809, and thirty years later he arrived in New Zealand, where , he was elected Bishop in 1845, since which time his unremitting labors and general urbanity had endeared him in a high degree, not only to the residents in his own Diocese, but to all who had the pleasure of being acquainted witb him, and, as a consequence, his mourners are both numerous and sincere. Football. .— The first match of the season, in which the sides had been arranged in the order of the initial letters of their names, the first half of the alphabet being raDged on one side, and the latter half on the other, was concluded on Saturday, wheD, after some excellent play, a goal was kicked by Vickerman. A letter has been received from, the Wellington Club accepting the challenge of the Nelson men to play them on the ground of the latter, and the match will probably take place during the current month. The Nelson team will be chosen without delay, and meet for practice as frequently as possible. Runaways. — Some alarm was created this morning by the sight of a runaway horse and cart belonging to Mr. Griffin, which started from the mill, and dashed through Hardy-street and up Toi-toi Valley at a speed which threatened danger to the passers by; fortunately, however, no accident resulted from the escapade. — A little later in the day, the bolt which fastens the shafts to the Railway Bus gave way, just before its arrival at the terminus at the corner of Hardy and Tra-falgar-streets, aud the horse bolted up the street to Mr. Newton's stables, inflicting some. serious cuts and bruises upon itself, but happily causing no damage to those who were in the street at the time. Intercolonial and Interprovincial Regatta. — We have received a circular from the Regatta Committee at Wellington stating their intention to hold an intercolonial and interprovincial regatta in Port Nicholson in the month of February next. The principal event of the meeting will be a contest between four-oared gigs, for which the prize will be £150. The course, which will be a straight one, will be about 3| or 4 miles in length. There will also be whaleboat and other rowing races during the day. The Committee are desirous of learning as soon as possible what prospect there is of the various provinces being represented, and will bo glad to learn from the boating community here whether there is any probability of their sending over a boat to take part in the great contest.
