MELBOURNE.
May 22. — The debate on the amendment to the reply to the Governor's speech resulted in a majority of two in favor of Ministers. A second amendment, embodying a direct vote of want of confidence has been moved, and is under debate, and will probably result in the defeat of the Government on the ground of corrupt exercise of patronage in making appointments, particularly one involving a scandal in connection with the Treasurer, who has resigned his portfolio in order to save his colleagues from embarrassment. In the course of the debate the Californian mail service was referred to, and it was said that Yogel had " out-Vogeled " Duffy in the agreement. Tookey's : buyers at £6. Flour, £16. Australian wheat, 6s. 10d;; New Zealand placed at 6s. 6d. The cargo of the Rachel Cohen has been trans-shipped to England. Sugar market firmer at last quotations. Advices from Mauritius state that the Parana was loading for Dunedin. Arrived : Briton and Wonga from Auckland; Albion from New Z u aland. Sailed: Seabird for Dunedin; Northern Light for Hokitika ; Golden Isle for Auckland; Ceres for Grey mouth.
