The Nelson Evening Mail TUESDAY, MAT 21, 1872.

"f* fe Encroachment of the Sea at Westport. — We regret to learn that owing to the bad weather on the Coast, the sea has made further encroachments at Westport, a portion of the Empire Hotel having been undermined and carried away last night. The Suez Mail. — This mail, which arrived in New Zealand last Saturday week, will reach Nelson this evening about 7 o'clock, by the Taranaki. We are requested to state that the Post Office will be open for the delivery of the mails as soon as they are sorted. Football.-A very good game was played on Saturday last, the sides being A to K versus Lto Z. The A's had the strongest side at first, but fresh members arrived for the latter part of the Alphabet towards the end of the game, and it was all their adversaries could do to save a goal. The game lasted two hours, and was well played throughout, no goal being got by either side. The match will be continued next Saturday, at 3 p.m. City Volunteers. — Thg Cadets and City Rifles were last evening inspected by Col. Harrington, who expressed his satisfaction at finding that the numbers were considerably increased, and trusted that for the future the volunteers of the province would continue to improve both in efficiency and numerical strength. He also alluded to the fact that Nelson had this year been unrepresented at the Colonial rifle contest, and trusted that this might be the last occasion on which she would fail to send a representative. , Mr. Saunders' Lecture. — Notwithstanding the unattractiveness of the title chosen for his first lecture, "Flesh and Blood," Mr. Saunders had a crowded audience at the Temperance Hall last night. The chair was taken by* the Rev. P. Calder, and with the assistance of diagrams, and a very pleasant manner of delivery, the lecturer kept his audience highly interested for an hour and a half. The subject of to-night's lecture is more attractive, and Mr. Saunders has undertaken to show how the character of an individual may be arrived at by the study of his head, face, chest, &c, and even by his handwriting. Oddfellows' Dinner. — The anniversary dinner of the Howard Lodge of Oddfellows took place at McGee's Hotel last night, his Honor the Superintendent occupying the chair, and Messrs A. Adams, and P. Cooke, the vice-chairs. The dinner was, as all Mr. McGee's are, excellent, and a very pleasant social evening was spent. Numerous toasts were drunk, and in reply to one of them Mr. Jennings, an old member of the Order stated that the Howard Lodge was established on March 25, 1846, when nine members formed it, only one of whom, Mr John Tinline, now survived. The nine who founded the lodge were Messrs Alexander Perry, Reuben Bird, Thomas Bright, Archibald McEwan, J. Tiniine, F. M'Donald, John M'Donald, , James Craig, and William M^Rae. ; On 20th May, 1846, Mr. Thomas Dodson, of Wakapuaka became a member ,

1847, when Mr. Jennings himself joine the lodge, there were 28 members, and the accumulated funds amounted to £19 6s. At tbei present time the funds amounted t j about £2,400, besides one-half the property the Oddfellows' Hall. The lodge had paid for the support of members during sicknets, £1,117 12s. 9d. ; widows and orphans of members, £470 18s. ; for expenses, £244 17s. 2d. ; and surgeon's salary £712 lis. ; making a total of £2,543 19s. sd.
