T^he Schooner Ocean Bird. — The steamer LytteltoD, which was sent out in search of the Ocean Bird was successful in finding her, and, assisted by the Charles Edward, has been engaged tbe whole of this morning in towing her down the Bay. Dun Mountain Railway. — A suggestion having been made to tbe Board of Works that they should purchase the above railway plant, it is their intention, we understand, to call a meeting of the ratepayers at an early date, to take the matter into consideration. Hurdle Race. — The match between Mr. Proffitt's Ronald and Mr. Thomas' Equity came off ou the racecourse this afternooD, and resulted iv the^first named horse coming in an easy winner, Equity having bolted off the course at one of the hurdles. Wesleyan Musical Festival. — A musical festival for the purpose of reducing the circuit debt is being arranged by the Wesleyans of Canterbury. It is computed that there will be over one hundred voices, and that the orchestra will consist of twenty-five musicans. Mr. Landergan will wield the baton, and a brilliant success is anticipated. St. Mary's Church. — At Vespers on Sunday evening last, the Rev. Father G-arin intimated that Thursday next, the 9th instant, being Ascension Day, a ma9s would be celebrated at 11 o'clock, and as that day had also been set apart for returning thanks to Almighty God for being pleased to restore the Prince of Wales to health and strength, a Te Deum would be sung during the service. Accident. — An accident occurred on Thursday last to a man named Squire, one of the Foxhill railway survey party, who, in jumping over a fence at Spring Grove, fell and dislocated his ankle and broke one of the small bones of the leg. Under the care of Dr. Oldham he is, we are glad to hear, progressing favorably. Pheasant Shooting. — Complaints reach us from all sides of the extent to which pheasant shooting is being illegally carried on just now, both in the country districts and the immediate vicinity of the town. The Provincial Government, we understand, intend taking steps to put a check upon this wholesale violation of the " Protection of Animals Act," and will make an example of the first person against whom the offence can be proved. Government Gazette. — The Gazette of the 29th April contains a not ; (ication of the resignation by Mr. Lightband of his seat in the House of Representatives. — The name of Mr. Lowther Broad again appears, this time as having been appointed Deputy-Registrar of the Supreme Court. — It is notified that tho tender of Mr. John Scott, of Nelson, for the erection of a Post-Office at Motueka for £252 has been accepted.
