Once round, Mr. Capper's Stella ..... 1 Mr. Warren's Firetail ... .... ... ... 2 Six others started, and there was a
capital race, the result taking eyeryone by surprise, as Stella certainly did not give the idea of being a racer. This Day. The cold raw wind that was blowing this morning had the effect of reducing the attendance on the course to even smaller proportions than yesterday, although the programme of the day's racing was a remarkably good one, and promised some excellent sport. Punctually to the time appointed the two horses, Peeress and Flying Jib came to the post for TOWN PLATE, of 40 soys ; second horse to save his stake. For three years-olds, 7st lOlbs; four. Bst 12lbs ; five, 9.-<t 4lbs ; six and aged, 9st 71bs ; 3lbs allowed to mares and geldings. Entrance, 4 soys. Two miles. Shortly after she was deprived of the lead for a time, but took care to regain it before reaching the winning-post, which she passed a couple of lengths in r.dvance of the Jib, Mason with hands down. Time, 4min. 2secs. CRITERION PLATE, of 25 soys ; entrance, 3 soys ; second horse to save his stake. There was a cry of "Off," almost instantaneously followed by shouts of " Awatea wins," and Awatea did win, having rattled away with a strong lead, which she gradually increased to some three or four lengths by which she came in tho winner, Laceufeed second Peeress having pulled up. Time : lmin. 24secs. HACK RACE, for a Gentleman's Saddle. Entrance, 10s. each. Catch weights. Once round. Mr. Warren's Firetail 1 Mr. F. H. Blundell's Cameo 2 Mr. R. M'Rae's Pompey 2 Mr. Hope's Heiress 0 Firetail took the lead from the start, and was not to be deprived of it, a splendid race for second place, which resulted in a dead heat, taking place between Cameo and Pompey. STOKE HANDICAP, of 30 soy?, added to a sweepstakes of 3 soys each, for all horses that have ran in the preceding races. One mile and a-half. Entrance, 2 soys. Mr. Walters' b m Slander, aged, 9st. albs. (French) 1 Mr. Redwood's eh m Peeress, 6 yrs, 9st. 6lbs. (Mason) 2 Mr. Hales' bk g Black Eagle, aged, Bst. 9lbs. (Owner) 3 Mr. Harris' eh m Lacenfeed, aged, 7st. lOlbs (Joyce) 4 Al the drop of the flag Black Eagle jumped away with a slight lead, closely followed. by Slander, Peeress and Lacenfeed a length or two behind, Peeress being last on passing the Stand. At the lower side of the course the Eagle and Slander were galloping stride for stride, and at the last corner Peeress rushed away from Lacenfeed, and at the distance post collared and passed Black Eagle, and raced Slander for first place, which however she failed in obtaining by half a length, although gaining on the bay at each stride. Time 2mins. 59secs. Considerable dissatisfaction was expressed at the handicapping for this race, the consequence being that a large number of the horses were scratched. It certainly is difficult to account for the manner in which the weights were awarded. HACK RACE for a Gentleman's Saddle ; Haif-a-mile. Entrance, 10s, Mr. Arnold's Miss Nightingale 1 Mr. Macrae's Pompey 2 Mr. Dodson's Polly 0 Mr. Watson's Karamea 0 Miss Nightingale went away with a strong lead and gradually increased her distance from tbe other horses until she arrived at the post an easy winner. Lyford) 4 Black Eagle went to the front at the drop of the flag, Fides getting a bad start, which she soon pulled up, and took the second place from the Hawk, but speedily resigned again iv his favor. At the last turn the two black geldings and Mystery were running close together, Fides swerving twice. The race, which was a well contested one, terminated as described above. ! This brought to a close the very sue* j cesß.ul meeting of 1872.
