CENTRAL BOARD of EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting was hold yesterday, Captain Rough in the chair. A memorial was receive:! from 30 ratepayors at Westport requesting, the Board to allo^.' aid to a separate school, established in tha name of St. Francis' school, similar to that given to St. Mary's school, Nelson. Some discussiou ensued, when, upou the motion of Mr. L. Broad, it was resolved, " That in consequence of the uncertainty of the Board continuing to hiivu control of education in the Province, it cannot grant any aid to St. Francis school beyond returning the rates." A motion was brought forward for the amalgamation of the Upper Wakefield and Foxhill schools on the south bank of the Wai-iti river. On this. subject there was such a diversity of' opinions, that an amendment proposed by Mr.'' Greenfield to the effect that the consideration of the question be postponed for six mouths was readily agreed to. The question of the abolition of the Clifton school again came uuder discussion V(*hen it was resolved that, while adhering to their decision to have ■ only a female teacher at £60 per annum, the Board will agree to any arrangement.' for. alternate teaching in the-. Clifton and Motupipi .schools that the- Local Committee may sanction, an opinion. being expressed that is would be preferable that the teaching should be conducted one-half of the day in oue school, and one-half ; in- the other, instead of in the manner proposed by the Committee. An application by Mr. Rose for , £15 to fence tbe school properly at Spring Grove was refused. The Committee appointed to wait upon the Superintendent on the subject of the Provincial Scholarships' at Nelson College reported that his Honor had promised that the £160 voted by the Provincial Council lor that purpose should be paid at once, and that the question of bringing in a Bill to make permanent provision for two scholarships an u ually, . tenable for two years, should be considered by the Executive. On the motion of Mr. Jennings it was resolved — " That, as the attendance nt the Clifton Terrace school has not exceeded 17 during the last two quarters, rule 41, according to which the salary is reduced to £48 in such cases, be adhered to. On the motiou of Mr. Rout it was resolved — " That in future, no accounts or applications for money shall be considered, unless they are received by the secretary two days before the monthly meeting of tho Board ." The Committee appointed to take into consideration the revision of the teachers' salaries reported that, jn • consequence of •the' existing uncertainty With regard lo the financial position of the Board, it was inexpedient to open'up the question at the present time.
