The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1872.
Nelson Artizans; — * It is scarcely necessary to remind our. readers that the members of the Artizans'. Association will give one of their popular, entertainments at the Oddfellows' Hall, this evening.
Bankruptcy.— This morning's Gazette contains a notification that George Charles Anderson, of the Upper Buller, Ac-commodation-house keeper, .has filed a declaration that he is unable to meet his engagements with his creditors.
Titoko Waeu. — It is reported at Wanganui that . Titoko, -Waru 'a ., -people.? were eight miles from Waigongora gathering fungUßj also .hat Titoko himself was at Waihi, and threatening that he. would in a month's time come and take possession of the land.
Supreme Court. — The long aud tedious case of Fowler v. Fowler and Young' was brought to a termination, at 11 o'clock last night. Although tbo amount in dispute was trifling, the evidence was exceedingly lengthy, ami the issues most, voluminous, there being no less than twenty-three. The whole of yesterday was occupied" by tho speeches of the two counsel and the Judge's summing up, and nt four o'clock the jury retired, and after being' absent a couple of hours returned to the Court statins that they were unable to agree. They were then, by the Judge's order, locked up until 10 o'clock, at which hour they requested a little longer time, and at eleven they returned with 'a verdict in favor of the plaintiff, although some points are still retained for discussiou before the Judge Jn Banco. NELSoy- Lunatic Asylum. — Tho following return shows the number of patients treated in the Nelson Lunatic Asylum during the year 1871 :—Remaining in the Asylum, December' 3 1st 1870, 37; admitted during the year, 19 ; total treated during the year, 56 ; discharged duriDg the year, 12 ; removed to other asylums during the year, 1; died during the year, 3; remaining in the asylum, December 31st, 1871, 40. The deaths were Mary Connell, Miles Boulton, aud •John Cotter. Thc asylum was visited by Ihe medical officer daily, by the visiting justices monthly, and by ministers of religion about fifty times during the year. Donations iu aid of a fund for providing entertainments for patients have been received to the amount of £15 17s. 4d., while £16 18s. 6d. has been expended, as recorded in a book kept at the asylum. Inangahua Reefs. — Several samples from the various claims at the luaugahua are now on view at the office of the Provincial Secretary, to whom they have been forwarded from the West Coast. Although gold is not to be seen in any of them iu large quantities, nearly every piece of stone discloses its presence when viewed with a magnifying glass. The most celebrated of the claims is that kuo'vn as Shiei's, which comprises an area of 600 feet square, and is the property of eight shareholders, one of whom disposed of half his share the other day for £1075, .and shortly after refused £1500 for the other half. The price now asked for a sixteenth share is, we are told, £2000. The machinery is on the ground, and the first crushing will take place next month. At Mr. Greenfield's office there is also to be seen a specimen of the coal found in the same locality, with which it is proposed to drive the engines. Spurious^Metal. — A small parcel of gold, weighing about 10 ounces, from the Upper Buller district, was recently presented for sale at one or the banks in town, when certain appearances led to a suspicion that it was not all genuine, and it was, consequently, handed to Mr. Tat ton to be tested, the result being that a little over half an ounce of spurious metal was discovered. The packer who brought the gold to town having obtained it in small quantities is unable to say from whom he obtained the adulterated portion. ; Referring to the trial of Captain Coath, of tbe schooner Jason, charged with kidnapping in the I South Seas, tho Brisbane Colonist says : — '•' As showing the great interest taken in the proceeding by persons in Eugland, we mny state thai; by the last mail instructions were sent out by. the manager of the London Times to a gentleman in this city to furnish a full report of the whole of the proceedings. Owing to tbe departure of the mail before the case had terminated, it was of course, impossible to give the whole of the evidence, but a report of what has already been given has been sent by the mail to the leading English journal." r The Sale of Poisons.— An Act relating to the sale of poisons \was; passed; in the last session .of the Assembly, .and came 'into force on: Monday, last. ' As many storekeepers, especially .those in country districts may not be acquainted with its provisions, it )*nay be as. "well, to quote a few extracts in , order that they may be placed on their guard, and not unwittingly render themselves liable to heavy penalties. Clause 4 states that it shall be unlawful for any .person, to sell, or keep open shop for ''-retailing, dispensing, or compounding any articles' designated as poisonous in this.orany preyious Act without he is duly registered. The registration — and here it may-be mentioned that Mr. John Sharp; R.M., has been appointed the registrar for the Nelson' district— is 1 to be effected as follows, 'y-— "Any person who wishes to sell or keep open shop for retailing, dispensing,. ; , or : compounding poisons, in ojny province,; or; other division of the colony, for which a registrar has been appointed, may be registered "Without . fee or reward on _pplieatt6n to the, registrar personalty, or'bjj-p .registered letter/' Theipe ,ffbe|j pr°.Yss_ons wiih-. r winch" i|^ill ' 6e* welt" for" storekeepers jto make themselves acquainted, but they are too lengthy for publication , and -we must
satisfy ourselves with calling attention to the Act which has just come into force. The following; are deemed to be poisons within tho '[ meaning of the Act : — Arsenic and its preparations, prussic achi, cyanides of potassium airi all metallic cyanides, strychnine and all poisonous vegetable alkaloids and their salts, acouite and its preparations, emetic tavlar, corrosive sublimate, canthurides, saviu and its oil, ergot of ryo and its preparations, laudanum, opium, oxalic acid, chloroform, beliadona and its preparations, essential oil of almonds (unless deprived of its prussic aciu) all preparations of opium or poppies, preparations of corrosive sublimate, preparations of morphine, red nnd white precipitates of mercury, every compound containing any of the poisons mentioned in this schedule when prepared or sold for tho destruction of vermin, the tincture and liquid preparations of cantharid.es.
