CORRESPONDENCE.

**** We are desirous of affording every reasonable facility for the discussion of public subjects; Int. it must be understood that we are in no way responsible for the opinions expressed by correspondents. To The Editor or the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir, — I wish to draw the attention of the Road Board to a great grievance complained of ou the road to the Baton, and I sco no other way o.f doing so but by the medium of your valuable paper, which is opeu to all, trusting to your kindness to insert the followiug. There

arc about 40 miners at work on tho Baton river makin*-; small wages, and I have no doubt will be for a long time to come, and as tho miners of course must come to*town sometime-*, tbey do so at Ihe peril of their lives, as I was witness of at the last flood, when one unfortuoate miner in attempting <o cross the Pierce got washed out into the Motueka river, which was running very strong at the time, but by God's mercy he was drawn into an eddy caused by the two rivers meeting, where he managed to scramble up the bank by the aid of the flax bushes growing on the side, very much exhausted. Now I think, as there is a good deal of traffic to and from the BatOD, and likely to be more, the least tbe Road Board can do is to put at least a footbridge over the Pierce. This would be a great benefit 'to the storekeepers, miners, and settlers, and I firmly believe be the saving of some valuable lives. I am, &c, A. James Peck. Miner, Motueka River.
