AMERICA.
A fire ' occurred in San Francisco on September 23rd, and destroy ed the -wholesale stores of Reddington, Hagtles, and Co. ; and another in Barpendiary's block. The total loss is near a million of dollars. A fire in Chicago, on September 7, burnt over seven blocks, causing a loss of 500,000 dollars. A second fire at Chicago, on October 8, destroyed 10,000. buildings, causing a loss of 150,000,000 dollars. All the business part ot the city is destroyed, and 100,000 people made homeless. Fires have occurred in the forests of Iforth Michigan, Wisconsin, and lowa, and have destroyed millions of dollars worth of property. Many lives have, been lost. At Pensauka, Wisconsin, thirty lives were lost, and a whole town was burnt. Prince Alexis is expected with the Russian fleet at New York this week. He goes thence overland to Washington and San Francisco. Subscriptions were received in aid of the sufferers by the great fire at Chicago at the Merchants' "Exchange of of San Francisco at the rate of 500 dollars a minute. The prisoners in the Nevada State prison at Carson's made a desperate attempt to escape, and wounded nearly the entire guard. Twenty prisoners escaped to the mountains. Seven were re-captured, aud the rest were shot, The steamer Dacotah is at New York receiving new boilers and other alterations, and will be ready for sea by Chrism as. She is expected to be the fastest boat.
