London, October 9 . - The state of the Queen's health is causing great anxiety. Mr. Gladstone and the Piince of Wales have been summoned to Balmoral. Great gales have occurred on the coast of England, resulting in many shipwrecks and loss of life. From Great Grimsby come harrowing details of shipwrecks occurring in full sight of people on shore. The ship James Booth foundered in the Bay of Biscay, and 18 men were drowned. The ship Hesperus, with all hands, has been lost. The ship Mount Sinai has been burnt at sea; no details reported. Strikes in favor of nine hours movement continue. The masters in Newcastle offer to compromise for nine and a-half hours till Jauuary; after that date, nine hours to constitute a day's work. Great distress prevails in consequence of the demands ou -workmen for subscriptions tt men on strike. The Daily Telegraph says :— "No doubt the nrsfortune of a deficient harvest will be added to the disaster of the cattle plague and the foot and mouth disease which are spreading throughout the kindgom with deplorable rapidity." In the district of Preston in one week 470 cattle were attacked. It is estimated there are 25.000 animals suffering in the United Kingdom. The pest involves sheep and swine. Besides this disease, pleuro-pneumonin is ravaging the herds of England and Scotland. The Times says a Bishop and Archbishop have appeared in the pulpit ot a Sootch Kirk, and conducted divine service. The announcement gave a shock to the sensitive ecclesiastically nervous in England, but other classes welcome the event of a system of reciprocity in pulpits. An explosion of fire damp has occurred at Glamorgan, and killed five men. Ths reported marriage between Prince Arthur and Princess Thyra, of Denmark, is pronounced untrue. Mr. Gladstone lias been presented with the freedom of the City of Aberdeen. He was enthusiastically receiver! there. It is reported that Millin in Morocco has been besieged by 12,000 Kabyles. Eeinforcements have been promised to the garrison. A letter from Teheran says 80,000 persons perished in Misctiad in July. Four successive tremendous explosions occurred in the establishments of the oil merchants in Chelsea. Thirty persons were injured.
