PRINCE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY.

1 ■ O " "Under the supervision oi Messrs. Austin and Edwards, a most excellent programme is being prepared for the sports, to take place on Thursday next, which promise to be far superior to anything of the kind we have yet seen in Nelson, and there can be no doubt that Mr. Kichardson's paddock 'will on that day prove the great centre of attraction to the inhabitants of both town and country. Prizes in the shape of gold and silver medals are being prepared by Mr. Hunter, of Bridge-street, and of the latter we have seen one very creditable specimen, on the obverse of which are the Prince of Wales' feathers surrounded by a wreath, the reverse being, at preseut, blank, but on which will be engraved the name of the winner. The entries for the two principal eveuts of the day closed on Friday last, and it will be seen that there are several athletes from this and the neighboring province of Marlborough who are not afraid to match themselves even against the two champions. For the six-mile running match the competitors have been handicapped as follows : — Austin Scratch Murphy (Blenheim) ... 500 yards Braham 500 „ Edvrards 500 „ F. Bolton 550 „ F. Simson 600 „ Hutcheson (Havelock) ... 800 „ For the four-mile walking race five have entered, who have been handicapped as follows : — Edwards ... Scratch Austin 400 yards Simson 400 „ Braham .... ... ... 440 „ Bowser 500 „ For all the other races entries can be made on the ground. As a termation to the day's amusements the Bijou Company will give a dramatic entertainment in the Oddfellows' HalJ, when the prizes will be presented to the successful competitors.
