DIOCESAN SYNOD.
The Synod met at three o'clock yesterday,' and with the exception of an hour's adjournment sat till one o'clock this morning. On the motion of Mr. Barnicoat, seconded by Mr. Piersoo, it was resolved: — " That the Synod has beard with great surprise and regret the proposed exclusion of clergymen of any denomination from the office of Inspector of Schools in the proposed Government Bill, inasmuch as it is a violation of the complete separation between Church and State in the colony. ... On the motion of Mr. Hunter Brown, who introduced his resolution in a. long and interesting speech, it was resolved : — " That this Synod fully responds to his Lordßhip the Bishop's utterances on the subject of the Maori Mission, in his opening address; recognises the duty incumbent on the Church in New Zealand of assisting the Maori Mission; and pledges itself to aid their Bishop in bringing this matter before the Church, in order to obtain help in men or money ior the work of the Mission. The Rev. C. 0. Mules moved— 1. That this Synod recognises the duty of uniting as far as may be possible, with other branches of Christ's Church, in promoting the : growth of that Church, as a whole, and of its individual members. 2. That to this end it is willing, in tbinly-populated districts to permit its places of worship to be used by ." the ministers and preachers duly recognised by the Wesleyan Conference, where the Trust Deed makes no express stipulation to the contrary; provided — 1. That such use be first sanctioned by the Bishop of the diocese, or his Commissary. 2. That the consent of the Minister and Churchwardens (if any) of the said district be first obtained. 3. That the ordinary control of the building, so far as respecting the times of service, &c, be retained in the hands of the Minister and Churchwardens; and all questions in dispute be referred to the Bishop for decision. 4. That each Minister or Preacher using the said place of worship shall have signed the following declaration, and have received the Bishop's license (or permission) in writing : — "I, the undersigned, do hereby solemnly declare that during my ministrations, in places of worship to which I may hare access in consequence of permission given -by ytha 'Synod of the Church of England in the Diocese of Nelson, I will not affirm or teach anythingcohtrary to the Word of ' God, and the doctrine and discipline of the Church of England, as set forth in the formularies now in use in the Church of England in New Zealand." ,5. That the abovq-pientioned license (or permission) may at any time be revoked in any individual case or cases by the Bishop of the Diocese: ' ; ' : ! A warm debate ensued, when the second resolution was , strongly opposed, ,-and, eventually the ' mover withdrew his motidb,at the' same time expressing his intention of jbringiog it forward again at the next"'m i eeting' of the Synod.
