I have caused -the gone "to be grubbed, and planted quicks in their stead, interspersing at distances of, eleven yards Engli h oaks; this is on. the Jirunk.line from Eichmond. ( It'isadmitted by most of the residents in this locality, that the grubting of such gorse fences and the substitution of deciduous quicks in lieu thereof, has "been, and is- likely to prove, beneficial to the main road abutting on this property; but whether or not, at the present time, I cannot but think Mr. Wither' s remarks are premature. It is a question for the Road Board as to how a road is injured in such a manner, " that the sun ana wind are excluded from a- highway ;to the: damage thereof," and I leave it to the public and to ihe Road-Board to say whether Mr. Wither' s fences and belts of trees abutting on the road, or those recently planted by me ate most calculated to injure the public weal, " ; I could, if it suited my purpose, argue as to the desirability of encouraging the growth of deciduous trees abutting on main' roads, as conducive to drainage, as we have so often witnessed in the mother, country, and could further state that a betterpiece of roadthan that leneath the shade of blue gums of eighteen years groth on the high road leading from Hodder's corner to Mr. Barnicoat's, and fronting Rostrevor, does not exist in the District; ; hut I have Faid 'sufficient for my purpose, and if my actions are so reprehensible by the substitution of walnut trees, for oaks, I presume I can, tinder the provisions of the Act, escape those dire penalties, which, as a resident, I never dreamt of incurring. I am, &c, Chables Cahuujg. Rostrevor, Richmond, Sept. 11, 1871.
