The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 1871.

Erratum.— ln the report of Waimea Road Board, in paragraph 3, for " Hamilton" read {i Hastilow." The Council. — The debate on the second reading of the new Executive Bill will commence\hortly after the Council meets this evening. Should it be con ducted in the same manner as thosp of tintwo previous evenings, it is likely V afford a considerable amount of entertainment to those outside the bar. Nelson Cloth Manufactory. — The Australasian, of April 29, refers to this manufactory as one of those industries that " has relied upon its innate vigor, and hathus grown to robust maturity without being spoon-fed by the Legislature. Collingwood Coal. — Mr. M. Webster has kindly placed at our disposal a letter from Mr. George, the manager of the gas-y works at Wellington, relative to the merits of the Collingwood coal for gns purposes, from which we make the following extract : — " The coal, as per sample, gives, as an average, 8,500 to 9,800 cubic feet of gas, and 11 cwt. of coke per ton, the illumina ting power beiDg equal to 18 caudles. This is equal to average Cannel coal obtained in England. If the average qualify of the coal is equal" to the sample, it woiHd be worth 3s. per ton more than the N.S.W. coal, on account of the superior brilliancy of the gas, but I have heard that it is sometimes mixed with a good deal of dirt and inferior coal, and if this is the case, it would greatly reduce the quantity of gas per ton of coal." We learn from a West Coast paper that the Hon. Mr. Sewell, Miuister of Justice, accompanied by Mrs. Sewell, recently arrived in Hokitika by the Christchurch coach. Mr. Sewell is said to be engaged in inspecting the gaols and lunatic asylumns of the colony, probably in view of the approaching session of the Assembly for the creation of a Central Es-ablishment of both kinds for the whole of the Middle Island. The accounts of the Governor's visit io Timaru, include some queer items. After the customary charges for luncheon, including " extra wines for his Excellency's table," we^ notice that the Triumphal Arch cost£ll 3s. The gunpowder used to fire a salute, cost no less than £5. The charge for " engrossing address "■ was two guiueas. It appears also that the good people of Timaru^hired a carpet for his Excellency to walk upon ; this item cost £2. Total cost £101 6a 6d." We should imagine he was ratlier dear, at the price. — Mercury. The Caledonian. — The Thames correspondent of the Hurald writes under ,date May 4.: — "The general stuff for the company at the various machines is showing, up splendidly, the show from the different levels being much of a sameness, and that is superior' to any before crushed. Id the 207 feet level, or lowest, there is a splendid show of gold to-day, and to-mor-row work will be resumed upon the run, and I shall then.' be in a positiou agaih^to give you the result of each day's labor. The whole of the workings arte 'now thoroughly secured, and no sioppage, it is hoped, vjrili be. experienced for some time to come. Arrival of the Nevada at Auckland. — About 11 oVlnck on Thursday, says the Neto Zealand Heraldythe stgmil"went up at this office of a steamer in sight; and a few seconds later the, English mail flags were hoisted at our flagstaff-, head. There was immediately a scene : of. commotion, as it was. at once certain that "the Nevada was cpming in. Crowds of i people began: to stream, down tothe wharf/ 1 and the American flag was hoisted in .ylarge numbers, both on board the shipping, 'and at the different stores and warehouses. Frdpi'tite -$h'arf' ''fydite*- 'some' ] 2s;jb'f 4hese> - /;'nationar : flags' : ''^ 'Jy'ingy.f jsy \ '. ;,12 otelopk, | th.eifjti could not' have been

fewer than between 2000 and 3000 people' on. the wharf,v,the majority of whom werSijj Congregated on the outer T. About a' quarter; to one, the Nevada showed round the" North Head, and came majestically' up the harbor, and when nearly opposite the wharf, fired a gun. A few minutes later she let go h^r anchor, at a short distance from the wharf somewhat to the disappointment of the crowd who had no doubt anticipated the chance of going on board and inspecting her. All sorts of .♦t»vp<inions were expressed aa lo her appearance^ &c, and, comparisons drawn between her aod other boats, Hut one thing is very certain, that ber passenger accommodation is very superior, and that she can travel with great speed. When it became known that She had not left Honolulu at the advertised time, and that she had made the voyage from that to ibis port in eighteen hours under her contract time, everyone was loud in her praise, and we certainly must congratulate Captain BJethan and the community of Auckland generally upon the great. success attending the voyage of the* first steamer of the new San Francisco route.
