WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.

Monday, May 1, 1871. The Board met at the " Star " ; all the members present. The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, the Secretary reported that he had written to the Government about the gravelling at the Waimea Bridge Embankment but they had not sent any reply; he also reported having forwarded to Mr. H. Martin, jun., a copy of agreement as ordered Mr. Rout reported having been informed by the Provincial Solicitor that as the road through Mr. Hill's land, stopped some years ago, had never been conveyed, the Board might proceed and throw it open to i the public. r The Surveyor reported having inspected* the bridge erected by Mr. Hamilton and, * finding the same satisfactorily done, he had settled with Mr. Hamilton. The agreement for letting the Toll-gate was signed by the members. The Secretary reported that having called on Mr. Roil in reference to alleged encroachment on the road, he "found none. The complaint arose from a misapprehension as to where the road from Mr. Buxtons Corner terminated. The Secretary reported that the entire work at Wenley Hill, let to J. Connel was nearly completed, and the Treasurer was authorised to pay the amount on the Overseer's certificate. Taylor's contract in Eves' Valley was very nearly completed, and other work in forming and improving the road in that valley has been done ; that the channel at Smith's Creek had been widened and deepened, .arid 1 as this was tide work, the new road there had been, formed to fill up time; that the contract for the wharf was not completed ; that the barge had heen scraped and tarred under contract with Borck ; that the timber for the tramway and wheels and axles had heen procured but the truck not made, waiting fuller instructions ; that Mr. Jellyman had used 24f yards of screened gravel in repairing the road between the hills ; that the work on the by-road at * Stoke, for which assistance to the amount of 50s. was promised to Mr. J. Taylor, had heen creditably done ; that Mr. Simmonds, having completed the gravelling near Mr. Woolleys, is entitled to the proportion promised, £4 7s. Od. ; that two culverts had been made in Pigeon Valley, and sundry other works and repairs to the amount of £17 6s. Od., but the road from Mr. Fairhall's corner to Price's contract required stumping and forming ; that the road near Mr. B. Lines' has been filled up, but as Mr. Lines complains that this will cut off the water and, injure his property, it is recommended to lay a pipe along the road. The Overseer was instructed to stop the clearing of the ditch above Mr. Harkness* gate and make a water table from that to the Star, also, to gravel part of Tomlinson's contract, that during the month he and the Surveyor had examined, and reported on most desirable places to make bricks and burn them. •■, The tenders invited having, been ' considered, that of J. Heinrick's at £11 for a culvert near Mr. Thomas' was accepted, of the others the Secretary was desired to* prepare fresh plan and specification, and to invite tenders for 14 days hence for the culvert at Greig's hill, and for gravelling on the Hope road ; also, for making a tip truck. The making of the bunkers at the wharf was "postponed until the wharf is completed. The Secretary was also ordered to prepare fresh plan and specification for a bridge at Spring Grove of bricks and timber. The Secretary was directed to remind Mr. H. H. Stafford of the promise in his note of December 29th to cut the gorse fences on the race course " the week after the races," and to give him notice that if the same be not done in 14 days proceedings will be taken. The Overseer having reported that he had given notice to Sir D. Monro to clear off the road the clippings from his gorse hedges which had not been attended to. The Secretary was desired to send a notice similar to that to Mr. Stafford. A memorial from residents in Dovedale praying that the road leading to Moutere from the main road in Dovedale should be repaired. It being stated that Mr. Cresswell, through whose land a part of the present road passed, wished the road to be; attended to. The Secretary was desired to ascertain from ail parties interested whether they i would be satisfied with the alteration, and should the reply he in the affirmative, the Overseer and himself to examine the proposed site, and should it prove satisfactory, prepare a specification for making the new road. Mr. W. Brooks attended and applied for assistance in making passable, the public road in Twin Gully, and was authorised to do' the work when it would be valued, and payment made on the usual terms. A letter was read from Messrs. R.
