CENSUS RETURNS.
The population of the province of Nelson is shown by the following figures, by which it will be seen that the sum ' total is 22,396, showing a falling off since 1867 of 1418, the total number at that time haviDg been 23,814. It is, however, satisfactory to" learn that, while there is an actual decrease throughout the whole province, the falling off is on the West Coast, the settled districts showing an increase of over 600 :—
