bewildered citizens, a galloping of horses with hose-reels and other apparatus in the direction of the supposed conflagration, an universal cry of " where is it ? " and v finally the the subsidence of all this bustle and excitement on ,its becoming: known that an old gentleman on the Waimearoad had taken advantage of the stillness of the evening to burn a heap of rubbish iu his garden, little dreaming that in do doing he was about to create such a stir in our usually quiet streets. We would venture to suggest that a little more discretion should be used in sounding the alarm of fire, as, otherwise, the tones of the bells will gradually come to be heard with indifference, although last night they certainly had me effect of affording one more proof of the alacrity "with which our zealots-Fire Brigade can turn out when occasion requires.
