The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JANUARY 12, 1871.

Panorama. — The panorama, illustrative of the San Francisco Mail Route, will be exhibited at the Oddfellows' Hall this evening, and, from what we can learn from the newspapers of other provinces, it must be well worth a visit. Nelson Institute. — A very handsome contribution was made to the library of this institution last night, when Mr. Huddleston presented the Committee with a complete edition of the works of Joha James Audubon on the Birds of America. The work, which consists of seven vols, and is profusely illustrated, was published in 1844, at the priee of £30, but since then it has gone out of print, and copies of it are exceedingly rare. Mr. Huddleston was warmly thanked by the Committee for his valuable gift, in recognition of which he was voted a member of the Institute for life. St. Mary's Schools. — JfcWill bo seen by an advertisement iu our columns, that Sisters of Charity are on their way out to Nelson to conduct St. Mary's Girls' School. We are given to understand that the Rev. Father Garin has recetved information from the Superioress of the Ladies that theiy, left London, by the Celasno, the tg-jlh of last October, and that they would arrive by tho end of January at Nelson. They will open a common school in which the. principles of purely secular education, according to the Education Act, will be strictly adhered to. Consequently children of all denominations will be admitted free ; and there will be no interference in the religious element. Besides the \ common school, they will open a select Boarding School, not only for the, young ladies of Nelson, but also those ij^lieighboring provinces. We hope thpope fine climate of Nelson, the beauffful dnd healthy site of the establishment, joined to the superior teaching in every brauch of English and French instruction, as the English and French languages will be taught respectively by English and French ladies, with a course of an accomplished education, will be an encouragement for parents to send their daugters under their tuition.
