Mr. Filzherbert, at the Hutt the other night, let the public into the secret of another important but newly created Government appointment. He said that when coming down from Melbourne recently, he had a fellow-passenger who made himself very agreeable, and, in the course of conversation, stated that he had left Ballarat to accept an appointment under the Government of New Zealand. Mr. Fitzherbert congratulated him, and wondered what the appointment was, but did not of course betray his curiosity. The Ballarat gentleman went on to say, " You have a colonial army, have you not," to which he replied that the colony had an Armed Constabulary, which served for an army. The Ballarat gentleman, with conscious pride, responded, "Ah, yes, I am going to New Zealand, to take the management of the tailoring department."
