CORRESPONDENCE.
PERSEVERANCE COMPANY.
To the Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail, Sik — We observe in the Colonist of November 9th, a letter signed " G. T." containing animadversions on the Perseverance Company, and insinuating that the " Golden Gully Cbaps," as he politely terms us, have fraudulently taken the water of the Perseverance Company. We beg to inform " G. T.," who is afraid of signing his full name, that his suspicions are. as mean and despicable as they are unfounded. We may here add that, till within the last six weeks, the Perseverance Company has had the full use of all the water that has come down the race, as well as our dams, since the Company started crushing operations, gratia. The quantity required to work the battery is over three sluice heads. For the information of the subscribing shareholders who seem to have very erroneous ideas bout the water, we wish to inform them that, a year ago, when the Company was first formed, ahere was the full quantity named in the Prostpectus, viz., three regulation sluice heads running which will be found registered in the Warden's office, at Collingwood. Since then, by decay and breaking down of boxes, and other casualties occurring along the race, it has gradually got into bad repair, and the water consequently gradually less, and will now only carry the water running along it at present. By improvement, and new boxes of a larger size substituted for the old ones, (which we are willing to co-operate with the Company in getting done according to our agreement), a much larger stream might bo brought down. At present no water conies down the race, or can be got (in the present state of the race) that the Company has not the full benefit of. Mr. Richmond, in his report, speaks of a head of water falling over the dam at the head of the Parapara river (where the river is dammed up to raise the wati j r to the level of the race) seven miles from Golden Gully, which head of water cannot be brought down till th.B flutning is enlarged. We should like to know what benefit we could derive, in cutting off the water, or in any way hindering the Company, when we have so large an interest at stake in it. The bringing in of the water over eight miles of rough, precipitous country to work the ground cost us over £3500; when it wa3 completed we had no further means to get machinery which was required to work the ground, and we called on the Nelson public to assist us. We are only working men, and the success of the Company is our only dependence. We trust that the majority of shareholders in Nelson do not believe in the insinuations thrown out by '' G. T." in his letter, but will unanimously join us in trying to rx ake the Perseverance Company a success, and worthy of its name, which will be a much greater benefit to all concerned than squabbling, and trying to find fault with one another. We are, &c, Francis Roach Henry Moore John McMahon W T Popple Thomas Adams Peter A Poulsen Golden Gully Company. Gol.len Gully, Nov. 14, 1870.
