Gas Company. —We have beeD informed on good authority that the idea of forming a gas company has been abandoned for the present. Fire Brigade. — The monthly meeting of the members of the Central Fire-brigade will be hell this evening, at half-past seven. The Suez Mail. — A telegram has been received stating that the Alhambra will arrive from Wellington about 4 a.m. to-morrow, and sail again for Melbourne via West Coast, by the same tide. The mails will therefore close at 8 o'clock this evening. A supplementary mail will be sent by the Rangitoto, now due on the Coast. Sunny Sides of Humanity. — Such is the title of an entertaiument about to be given at the Assembly Room, on Monday evening next, by Miss Adelaide Bowring, Mr. J. B. Steel, and Mr. and Mrs. M'Gowan, who have been performing in different parts of New Zealand with considerable success for some time past. We may here state that the stage of the Assembly Room will on this occasion present a greatly improved appearance, a proscenium and new scenic effects having been provided. Runaway Horses. — As Mr. H. Hounsell's trap was standing at his door this afternooD, the pony took fright at something, aud suddenly started off in the direction of the Port, but was soon brought up by coming into collision with a kero-sine-laded hand-cart belonging to Messrs. N. Edwards & Co., which was upset, and two of the cases of kerosine smashed ; the trap also being capsized, but not much damaged. The noise of the collision started a horse which was standing in a cart at Mr. Wilkie's door, and caused him to start ofi at a gallop in the direction of Wakapuaka, whence it had come, and he was uot stopped before arriving at the river, a number of groceries being upset out of the cart in the road. Fortunately no accident of a serious nature occurred.
