The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1870.

Lecture. —We would remind our readers of the lecture to be delivered at the Temperance Hall, this evening, by the Rev. F. C. Simmons. Death of an Old Settler.— Our obituary notice of to-day announces the death of Mr. Joseph Newport, of Appleby, a Nelson settler of 28 years standing. We understand that Mr. William Pitt has received by telegram, the names of hail, as required by the Bench, to-day for the prisoner Harris, and that the sureties offered have been approved as sufficient by Dr. Giles, the Eesident Magistrate of Westport. Penny Eeadings. — Over 250 of the boys of Nelson congregated at the Temperance Hall, last evening, and were entertained by readings by the Rev. G. H. Johnstone, Mr. G-oulstone, Mr. H. D. Jackson, varied by songs by Mr. Lowe, Mr. Sigley and several members of the Artizan's Society. The European News. — We have no time to-day to refer to the startling news received by the mail any further than to state that its bearing upon our colonial politics is of such importance that the session of the Assembly is likely to be prolonged in consequence, a telegram to tbat effect from one of our members having been received in town to-day. Eaffle. — It will be seen that a raffle is to take place at the Trafalgar Hotel, to-morrow evening, for two " wager skiffs," which have lately been built by Mr. Freeman in anticipation of the Nelson Eegatta. These boats are exceedingly light, their weight not exceeding 60 lbs eacb, and in smooth water they could, no doubt, be propelled at racing speed. The Late Eescue from the Bailiffs. — Edward M'Cafferty was this afternooii brought before the Eesident Magistrate,

charged with rescuing his horse. from the custody of the bailiffs, and also with assaulting a bailiff at Motueka Valley. Prisoner was remanded until Tuesday. M'Cafferty was arrested at Westport, whence he was brought up yesterday in the Murray, and iu order to demonstrate the advantages of the telegraph, we may state that the police telegraphed a description of the man to Westport on Wednesday, and within twenty-four hours of the despatch of the telegram he was lodged in tho gaol at NelsoD.
