. Jewellery. — The stock of jewellery at present displayed at the Trafalgar Hotel will not be on view much longer as Mr. Salomon, we understand, purposes leaving for the North in the Phoebe now daily expected. Winter Evening Entertainments. — It will be seeu by an advertisement which appears iu another column that the Christ Church Orgau Committee have made arrangements for a series of entertainments to be given during the winter evenings in aid of the organ fund. The first of these is to take place on Tuesday evening next, the programme comprising an address from the Rev. G. H. Johnstone, to be followed by vocal and instrumental music, recitations, &c. Independently of the very laudable purpose for which these entertainments have been got up, the first of the series possesses in itself so many attractions that there can be no doubt thuL the Assembly Room wiil be well filled on Tuesday evening. We sincerely' trust that the very praiseworthy efforts made by the Committee will meet with the success they so richly deserve, and we are glad to*, observe that they have had the good sense to fix the prices of admission at so low a rate as to render the entertainment accessible to all. Harmonic Society.-— The concert to be given by this society at the Provincial Hall this evening is likely to prove one of the most successful that has taken place for some time past. Within the last few months the ranks of the performers have received considerable additions, aud on the present occasion it happens that there are two of the old members of the society in town who will give their assistance in the instrumental portions. The first part, as stated in the advertisement, is to consist of Mozart's Twelfth Mass, on the practice of which much time and attention have been bestowed, aud, although it is not to be expected that in a small community such as ours full justice can be done to the exquisite conceptions contained in this favorite production of the great composer, still it must not be forgotten that we are entirely indebted to the Harmonic Society for the opportunity of ever hearing high class music of this description. The second part, in which we are to have the pleasure of hearing one or two entirely new voices, comprises a miscellaneous collection of songs, choruses, glees &c. As this concert is, in all probability to be the last for which tickets may be purchased, it may be expected that the Hall will be crowded to its utmost limits. The Goldflelds of Otago are gradually increasing iu their yield. The escort returns for the six months ending last month were close upou 70,000 0z5. The miners at work oa the celebrated Golden Crown claim at Auckland have, it is reported, come across some very rich quartz in the main reef, and at eighty feet below high water mark. A Sporting novelty has been introduced at Canterbury but proved a failure. Several Kakas were put into traps iu the same manner as pigeons, but on the traps being removed they made no attempt to rise. The next move was to get them from a spring-trap, that was also a failure. Heaving them up in the air was then tried, but the birds made no attempt at flight. Tt is supposed they had been kept in confinement too long aud become too tame. With respect to the New Zealand Commissioners, a correspondent writes to the Wanganui Chronicle, from London, as follows: — After all, Featherston has not done any good. His first interview with Lord Granville was decisive. Featherston made a capital and elaborate speech, telling the Secretary for the Colonies all about New Zealand's wrongs, aud what was wanted to set them right. To the intense astonishment of the Doctor, Lord Granville, at' the conclusion of the speech, slapped him on the back in a jocular manner, and said, " Look here old man, it's no use jawing. We won't give you any troops, and we won't give you any money. But look here, as you and Bell have come all the way from NewZealand to see me on this business, I'll do all I can to make you as comfortable as possible. You caa have a snug dinner at
the club. I'll get you presented to the Queen, and everything considered, you'll have a good time of it." It seems that Dr. Featherston philosophically acquiesced in this. He did get presented to theQueen, and being dressed in full Court suit remarked to a friend, in leiving the precincts of the palace, " Well, I don'e know whether I looked like a fool or not in that ridiculous costume, but I Jelt awfully like one." Passing Overland. — The passenger of the Wonga Wonga as they passed, through Chicago aud New York, excited much interest. The press welcomed these pioneers of an Australasian trade ; aud a favorable impression was made upon Congress in favor of the steamship subsidybill now before it.
