LAST NIGHT'S COUNCIL.
o On the motion of Mr. Donne, the following resolutions were adopted without a division : — l. That with a view of fostering and extending goldfields industry, this Council would urge upon the attention of the Colonial Legislature the great necessity, which it is believed exists, for making some provision which shall secure a comprehensive scheme for a cheap water supply for tbe goldfields of the Colony. 2. That an address embodying the foregoing resolution be forwarded by the Speaker to both Houses of the General Assembly. 3. That his Honor the Superintendent be requested to place upon the Supplementary Estimates the sum of seven huudred pounds as a subsidy for the Charleston Reservoir, to be expended, subject to the approval of the Executive, under the control and supervision of the District Engineer, and under the conditions named in the Select Committee's Report. The Report of the Committee appointed to consider the petition of ministers of religion asking for exemption of tolls, which! recommended that their prayer should be j granted, and that a like privilege should be extended to the police, when on duty, was adopted. The Report also recommended that couveyauces carrying her Majesty's mails should not be exempt, as uea«ly all of them were engaged in passenger traffic as well. The Council then went into committee on the Estimates, Mr. Tarrant in the chair. The following amendments were made iu the Estimates: — Hospital Contingencies increased from £1250 to £1500; bonus to Mr. Batchelor reduced from £100 to £50; Compensation to Mr. [Campbell increased from £250 to £350; Fire Brigade increased from £130 to £150. AU the other items as far as " Education" were carried as they appeared on the Estimates. The Council then resumed and adjourned until this 'morning, at 11 o'clock. This Day. The Council met at 11 o'clock. On the motion of Mr. Luckie it was agreed to place on the Supplementary Estimates the sum of £50, to meet an equivalent subscription from the Nelson Volunteers, for the purpose of building a Drill Shed and Armoury for the Volunteers of Nelsou. j The Council having gone into Committee I
upon the Estimates, Mr Shephard appealed to the Committee to take into consideration at once the items under the head "Executive," as he considered that the amendment moved by Mr O'Conor on a previous evening to the effect that the Secretary should act as Treasurer as well, was tantamount to a vote of confidence in him (Mr Shephard) This was agreed to and the Committee proceeded to consider the Executive items, the whole of which were passed without amendment, with the exception of " Goldfields Representative, £150," which was altered to "Goldfield Official," £500. During the morniug, Mr. Wilkie took his seat as member for the Grey.
